Flawed but Forgiven

This is my story, the story of an imperfect but sincere follower of Jesus. Whether you are a follower of Jesus or not, this story is for you. I share highlights from my spiritual journey of over 30 years.

Follower of Jesus? You will be encouraged. Curious about Jesus? You will be intrigued.

People are just people. There are no “super saints”. Not long ago I met a co-worker that said her church had t-shirts that said “Me too”. On March 4, 2014 I had a moment of clarity about my own brokenness that left me forever changed. I wrote in my journal “There is no sin that I have not either committed or thought about and according to the Sermon on the Mount that is the same thing. I am like other men.” As I evaluate my life, my biggest sin is being self-absorbed. This was largely responsible for the breakup of my marriage of 26 years and the hurt it caused so many people including our 5 kids.

I am God’s favorite. And you can be too. Jesus said “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you” (John 15:9). The way God the Father loves Jesus is the way Jesus loves you! Wow! When you accept Jesus’s payment for your sins “though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” (Isaiah 1:18).

God never stops doing miracles.  I challenged an atheist friend of mine to just reach out to God and say “if you are real, show me”. He responded and said “why don’t you just pretend that God is not real”. My comment was “that would be like you pretending that your wife wasn’t real”. The biggest miracle for me is the day in and day out “little” things that God does for me and the conversations we have. But sometimes He really shows out:

In 1985, a local minister had me sit in a church pew and then looked at my legs. One leg was about ¾ of an inch shorter that the other. He prayed and I watched and felt my leg grow out to be the same length as the other one. To this day, when I stand in the shower, I thank God because I know that happened and God did it. That was a miracle.

In 2004, my family and I were attending a church conference in Tulsa, OK. The leader said “if you have any kind of dental problems, lay hands on your own mouth, and pray for healing”. My son (age 15 at the time) prayed and the 6 gray, amalgam fillings in his mouth disappeared. That was a miracle.

Several years ago I was in my office at work and was just weeping after a devastating phone call. In that moment I felt God’s presence and knew that He was with me. That was priceless and that was a miracle.

Last year I was down to my last $100 in my checking account when a friend called and said “how are you doing provision wise?” That was the beginning of a remarkable financial turnaround. That was a miracle.

God’s promises are true. You may be reading this and thinking “yeah but where was God when  . . . ?” I don’t pretend to have the answers to all those questions but one thing I know: if you sincerely give your life totally to God, He will do what is best for you in the light of eternity. He did it for Jesus and He will do it for you.

My top recommendation for people curious of Jesus (other than the Bible): I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist by Norman L. Geisler and Frank Turek.
