I believe, in the future, one operating system will rule all platforms. Which one?
It doesn’t really matter, but if I had to guess, I would guess Chrome OS.
We are seeing glimpses of the future in Windows 8. Windows 8 is the first OS that could run without compromise on phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops. Imagine how cool it would be if all your keyboard shortcuts, gestures, voice commands, and mouse clicks worked the same across all your devices.
In the next couple of years, Android and Chrome OS will surely merge. In the same vein, Mac OS and iOS are likely to also merge. So, by around 2013, you will have operating systems from Microsoft, Apple, and Google that will all work well on all devices (at that time probably integrated with our cars as well).
Why does this matter? Because we will be more efficient and less stressed when it all looks and works the same. Besides that, you will purchase an app for one device and it will automatically be added to all your devices.
So, who is going to win at this game? I think all three will still be players but I think the big winner is going to be Google’s Chrome OS. Why? Because they will continue to give it away.
So what do you think? Sound off in comments.
