If you lost every hard drive that you are responsible for today could you easily recover them? If not, you need better backups.
Fact 1: All hard drives fail it’s just a matter of time.
Fact 2: If you don’t make backups easy, you won’t do them.
Many of us have computer jobs at work and aren’t real fond of being techs at home. On the other hand, it takes a whole lot longer to and its a whole lot more painful to recover or rebuild a drive than to restore one from backup.
What do I use?
Carbonite. Carbonite is an online backup service that’s so easy to use even your mother can set it up (without calling you). I know because my mom did. I love it because no matter where I am, as long as I have an Internet connection, it backs up everything automatically. There are several competing services out there but Carbonite is the one I use and recommend.
Windows Home Server. If you have several machines at home, this is the way to go. You can either order it as a hardware and software combination (e.g. HP MediaSmart Server) or you can order just the software from places like NewEgg and put it on an old box. Either way this is one sweet solution. Once you have it set up, it automatically backs up all the machines in your house every night.
Whatever you do – do something! You don’t want to have that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach when you find out the drive with your wedding pictures on it has just crashed.
How about you? What are your favorite backup solutions?
